Background

An organization with a small editorial team had an ambitious goal: To create a Website that would be a leading provider of news, features and resources related to the impact of technology on society. To meet their goal, they needed a flexible content management system that would allow for permissions, secure online content posting, organization by content type (such as "News"), organization by topic (such as "Stem Cell Technology") and various other features, such as automatic content interlinking.

Issues

The editorial team had several needs:

  • Secure online content posting: Since the team was dispersed and planned to add international contributors, secure online content posting was essential.
  • Permissions: Since the team was composed of authors, editors, publishers and administrators, different people needed different privileges.
  • Organization by type: Since there were several sections for the proposed Website, such as News, Features and Resources, the team needed a way to keep content organized by type.
  • Organization by topic: Since the Website would deal with various topics, such as Nanotechnology and Gene Therapy, the team needed to organize content by topic as well as type.
  • Various features: Since the team wanted to engage a broad audience and provide a Website to rival the best on the Internet, they needed such advanced features as a search engine, automatic content linking, a search optimization page and send-to-a-friend viral marketing.

Approach

Memetica's strategy team developed a plan that addressed the editorial team's needs using Memetica's content management system and an appropriate site architecture. Memetica's graphic designers then created a look-and-feel for the Website while Memetica's Web development team configured the Website to use the content management system. The entire process took less than a month.

Results

The Website, Betterhumans, came online in June 2002 with all the features and functionality the editorial team needed to pursue its goals. Since then, the team has added hundreds of articles and Betterhumans has attracted international attention for its design, content and functionality. Memetica continues to work with the Betterhumans team on such things as marketing initiatives, functionality and design.
